Stopping serious bleeding
When there’s a lot of blood, the simplest action is the strongest: press, and keep pressing.
Control the bleed
- Put on gloves if you have them, then press a clean cloth firmly right on the wound.
- Keep steady pressure for at least 10 minutes without peeking.
- If blood soaks through, add another cloth on top — don’t remove the first.
- Raise the injured area above the heart if you can.
A few tips
- If an object is stuck in the wound, leave it in and press around it.
When to get help
- Call 911 for spurting blood, bleeding that won’t stop, a deep or large wound, or signs of shock (pale, cold, faint).
Strong hands, steady heart. You are exactly who they need.
