Mind & connection

Talking with someone living with dementia

You can’t argue someone out of confusion, but you can always meet them in their world. Connection matters more than correction.

Ways in

  1. Approach from the front, smile, and use their name and a calm, low voice.
  2. Ask one simple thing at a time and give plenty of time to answer.
  3. Join their reality instead of correcting it — feelings are true even when facts aren’t.
  4. When words are hard, lead with touch, music, and a warm tone.

A few tips

  • Redirect gently rather than reasoning: a snack, a song, or a stroll can reset a hard moment.
  • If a question repeats, answer the feeling behind it (“You’re safe, I’m right here”).
Beneath the fog, the person you love is still there — and they can still feel love. Always.
