Fall-proofing the home

Most falls happen in the home, and most are preventable. An afternoon of small fixes can prevent a hospital stay.

Everywhere

  1. Clear walking paths; remove or tape down loose rugs and cords.
  2. Add bright, easy-reach lighting and night-lights along the route to the bathroom.
  3. Keep daily items at waist height so there’s no reaching or stooping.

Bathroom & stairs

  1. Install grab bars by the toilet and in the shower; add a non-slip mat.
  2. Make sure stairs have a firm handrail and a contrast strip on the edges.
  3. Set the shower chair and raised toilet seat if balance is a concern.

A few tips

  • Good non-slip footwear indoors beats socks every time.
A safer home is freedom — it lets someone stay where they love being. That’s a beautiful goal.
