About JourneyKin

Built from need. Built from love.

JourneyKin exists because I lived two chapters that made one thing painfully clear: the tools families and patients needed simply didn't exist. So I built them. ∞

Where this began

Love will make you move mountains. And it will show you every gap in the system.

I've come to believe that hard chapters are also clarifying ones. They strip away what doesn't matter and leave you staring at what does — what's missing, what's broken, what someone should have built a long time ago.

My father is in his eighties and lives abroad. When he fell and needed care, I was thousands of miles away and I went. That's what you do. You put everything on hold, you get on a plane, and you show up. But showing up in person is only half the equation. The harder problem — the one nobody talks about — is what happens to the care when you leave.

There were caretakers coming and going, family members spread across time zones and languages, a doctor giving instructions that got filtered through four different people before they reached me. There was no shared record, no reliable way to know what was actually happening. I built spreadsheets nobody opened. I sent messages into group chats that went unread. I got on a return flight with genuine uncertainty about whether my father's medications were being managed correctly — and that uncertainty didn't stop when the plane landed. It just became a different kind of helplessness.

"Good intentions scattered in a dozen directions don't add up to good care. The people in my father's life all wanted to help. What was missing wasn't love — it was a system. A shared place where a scattered family could finally act as one."

That realization became the foundation of JourneyKin.

So I started building. Not a symptom tracker. Not a patient portal. Something closer to a calm, intelligent home for a care situation — where everyone involved could see the same picture, where nothing got lost, where a family separated by thousands of miles could coordinate with the same clarity as people in the same room.

And then life handed me a second chapter — a heavier one.

Someone I love was diagnosed with cancer. And for the first time, I wasn't the one coordinating care from the outside. I was watching from up close what it actually means to live inside a serious illness. The treatments, the side effects, the appointments stacked back to back, the constant weight of managing information that never stopped arriving. But what struck me most wasn't the medical complexity — it was the space between appointments. That long, quiet stretch where you're alone with your questions, where something doesn't feel right and you don't know if it's worth calling about, where you've seen three different doctors in two weeks and none of them has the full picture. Where 2am arrives and there's no one to call.

I watched someone I love navigate all of that without anything close to an adequate tool. And I understood something I hadn't fully grasped before: the app I was building for families wasn't enough. The person living a diagnosis — not just the people supporting them — deserved something powerful in their corner. A knowledgeable companion. An organized record. A way to feel less alone in the space the medical system doesn't fill.

That's what JourneyKin became. One platform. Two journeys. The family holding everything together from the outside, and the individual carrying the weight from the inside. They're the same human experience seen from different seats — and they both deserved a home. ∞

Every feature in this app exists because someone needed it and it wasn't there. Every design decision comes back to the same question: does this make a hard situation even slightly less hard? Does this help someone feel less alone in a chapter they never asked for?

That's the only standard that matters to me. That's why JourneyKin exists.

Our mission

Help families and individuals navigate the hardest chapters of their lives — with more clarity, more alignment, and more genuine hope than they could find alone.

We're not trying to replace a care team or prescribe what comes next. We're here to carry the coordination — so the people in it can do the one thing that actually matters: show up fully for each other, and keep reaching for what's still possible.

Our journey

How JourneyKin came to be

👴

My father falls — and I fly thousands of miles

My father, in his eighties and living abroad, falls at home alone. I leave on short notice and spend two extended visits — eight weeks in total — discovering how overwhelming it is to coordinate care for someone you love when you're thousands of miles away, across languages, time zones, and rotating caretakers.

📓

The coordination breakdown that became a design principle

My father keeps his entire life in handwritten paper calendars — one per year, every phone number, every appointment, every note. When I'm thousands of miles away trying to coordinate his care with multiple caretakers and family members, there is no system. There are group chats nobody checks, spreadsheets nobody updates, and phone calls where everyone has a different version of the truth. I realize the problem isn't my family — it's that the right tool simply doesn't exist. That becomes the mission.

💡

The idea becomes a mission

I realize no tool exists to help a family communicate clearly, plan together, and act as one — not just for managing tasks, but for keeping hope alive and a whole person visible. I start building the app I wish had existed. Every feature comes from a real frustration I lived through personally.

💛

A cancer diagnosis — and the missing half of the app

While building the caretaker platform, someone close to me receives a serious cancer diagnosis. I watch what that journey looks like from the inside — the treatments, the fear, the isolation between appointments, the questions that arise at 2am with nobody to call. The app I'm building isn't enough. The person living the illness needs something just as powerful as the family coordinating around them. The mission expands: one platform, two journeys, one shared home for an experience seen from every seat.

Our people

The founder

Ike Thaler

Founder & CEO · JourneyKin

Ike built JourneyKin out of two chapters he didn't choose: caring for his father from far away, and walking alongside someone he loves through a serious illness. Both experiences left the same frustration — and the same belief that the right tools, used with intention, can make something hard feel a little more possible.

Before JourneyKin, Ike spent years building products, running businesses, and studying what it means for a person to close the gap between where they are and where they want to be. That study is still his North Star. He believes words create worlds — and that the right technology, in the right hands at the right moment, can help a family move from scattered and reactive to aligned and hopeful.

He's an entrepreneur, a son, a father, and the kind of founder who answers his own email. You're welcome to write to him: hello@journeykin.com

A note about Jennifer

The features that make JourneyKin a companion for individuals — not just a coordination tool for caretakers — were shaped in large part by a remarkable woman named Jennifer. Facing a hard diagnosis with a grace and honesty that left everyone around her in awe, she described what it would feel like to have the right app in your corner during the hardest season of your life. She was right. Those features are in JourneyKin because of her. We are grateful for her courage, her insight, and the gift of what she shared.

This one's for you, Jennifer. ∞
